⛽ Why do I need to report fuel consumption by individual Bunker Delivery Note (BDN) when the fuel is stored in the same tank?
Understand why BDN-based fuel reporting is important for accurate emissions calculations, FuelEU Maritime compliance and traceability.
Even when different fuel deliveries are stored in the same physical tank, fuel consumption must be allocated to the individual Bunker Delivery Notes (BDNs).
This is because each fuel delivery may have different characteristics that affect its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
This is particularly important for biofuels and e-fuels, which can have significantly different GHG emission factors.
Why is BDN-based reporting necessary?
Each BDN provides the documentary basis for identifying the fuel and its relevant characteristics. Together with the applicable supporting documentation, this information is used to:
- Calculate GHG emissions accurately using the characteristics of each fuel delivery.
- Determine FuelEU Maritime compliance based on the applicable emission factors.
- Assess potential FuelEU penalties resulting from the calculated GHG intensity.
- Ensure traceability between delivered fuel, reported consumption and emissions calculations.
What if different BDNs are stored in the same tank?
The physical tank is simply the storage location.
For emissions accounting, fuel consumption must still be allocated to the relevant BDNs, even when the fuels are physically mixed.
This ensures that the characteristics of each fuel delivery remain traceable throughout the reporting process.
❗Remember: Physical fuel storage and emissions accounting are two different things. Even if fuels are stored in the same tank, their BDN-specific characteristics must remain traceable.
